BoyleSports World Grand Prix Darts 2021

BoyleSports World Grand Prix Darts 2021

Gerwyn Price will begin his defence of the BoyleSports World Grand Prix in October. The bookies favourite, however, is not with a recent injury. Gerwyn pulled out of the Nordic Darts Masters after round one, sighting a recurring injury to his throwing arm. In a bid to not put further strain on his arm Gerwyn decided a rest was required so he could concentrate on the World Grand Prix.

Gerwyn has also won the World Darts Championships in January and, more recently, the Hungarian Open part of the PDC European Tour of Events. An on-form Price is hard for any player to beat, but his recent injury woes might put a dampener on the doubles!

Have a look at the latest darts betting odds for the BoyleSports World Grand Prix. There may be a good outside bet to have on one of the lower-ranked players this year.

Double Start, Double Finish

If you are new to darts, you probably think all the matches are straight and double finishes. But the BoyleSports World Grand Prix has a slightly different format. Players have to start on a double or centre bullseye (double outer bullseye) before they can start reducing their score from 501 to Zero. The players also have to finish on a double or centre bullseye. This format can make the task a little more difficult for anyone that has played this format.  Failing to start within the first three darts automatically gives your opponent the advantage, which does not lead to a few upsets. Seeded players have fallen in the first round because of missed doubles. And what about a nine-dart leg?

Nine dart legs are becoming more common, and we somehow expect to see one hit in a major darts event by with a double start; this feat just gets a little more challenging!

Brendon Dollan became the first to hit the perfect nine-dart leg in this event and coined himself a new nickname in the process, 'The History Maker'. However, he is not alone in this camp. In one match, both James Wade and Robert Thorton hit nine-dart legs against each other in the same match; who would bet on that happening?

BoyleSports World Grand Prix Players 2021

The Top Sixteen

The top sixteen by PDC Order of Merit form the seeding for the BoyleSports Grand Prix, and seeded No.1 is Gerwyn Price. Gerwyn, the current World Darts Champion, will start as the favourite but is unlikely to have it all his own way.

Peter Wright, the current World Matchplay and World Cup winner, is yet to win this event. Although Peter will be ranked at No.2, his performance relies heavily on his chosen dart setup. He changes the dart, flight and stem style and weight frequently. Fans may have thought after winning the 2020 World Darts Championship with a new set of darts made by his dart sponsor that he found the set which made him a winner and kept these for a while longer! You can say that you can never second guess the clown, as some call him. The Snakebite still has venom in his tungsten, so let's see what he delivers.

Michael van Gerwen a former five-time winner of the World Grand Prix, has lad a long spell without a title until he won the Nordic Darts Masters. The win was an emotional time for Michael, and it may have just come at the right time for him to push on to even more titles.

The BoyleSports World Grand Prix will be firmly in Gerwens sights as he tries to make it title number six.

Michael Smith

Smith has shown he has the darts to win a big major. However, he falls at the final hurdle more often than not, yet many believe it is just a case of time before the narrow defeats turn into comprehensive victories. Smith has the game to beat anyone on the PDC circuit, and he knows it, and a little more control over his temperament will see him lifting the trophies.

Michael Smith was the 2019 World Darts Champion runner-up and the 2020 World Matchplay runner-up. He may be one of the intelligent bets to have this week!

Jonny Clayton

The quiet man of the sport has shown the top players he is also one to fear. Winning the Premier League on his debut in 2021 is no mean feat, and many neutral fans will welcome his return to the league next year.

Clayton is one of the payers who always seems in the mix at the business end of a darts tournament. He was, however,  recently beaten by Michael van Gerwem in the semi-finals of the Nordic Darts Masters, which may question if he is on top form to take the World Grand Prix title. As an outsider, this dart throw may slip by before you had a chance to view his performance. The welsh player has the game but will be picking up the trophy at the end of the week; that is a harder one to call!

Previous Winners

If you look at the previous winner as your guide, you will see a few in the mix that has the game to do well. Besides Michael van Gerwn, Gerwyn Price, the prominent name on the leader board is Phil Taylor, who dominated the sport for the best part of nearly two decades, winning the event eleven times. He was never the bridesmaid here! Phil has now retired, but a few of the players that have been recent runners up might draw some interest to punters. Gary Anderson, Dave Chisnall are two that will be returning to the World Grand Prix.
